University of Baguio Chamber Orchestra: A Symphony of Brilliance and Tradition

Written by Lyndel Andrae M. Riña, ECT

Under the guidance of its music director, Mr. Nelson O. Polvoriza, the University of Baguio Chamber Orchestra, one of the University of Baguio’s recognized performing arts groups, held its yearly auditions for all its members last July 17-19. Due to this tradition, the group continues to uphold its high standards of musical brilliance. UBCO also opened its doors to new talents to join the group through auditions that lasted until the first week of classes in August.

UBCO is more than just a musical group; it’s an organization within the University that gives scholarships to deserving and talented students from different departments at the college level and from the senior high school department. Through these scholarships, members who pass the auditions can pursue their academic and artistic dreams and elevate UBCO to a higher level among the UB community.

The University of Baguio Rondalla (UBR) and the UB Quartet are two sub-groups of the UB Chamber Orchestra that add flavor to the University’s musical offerings. During the University’s Founding Anniversary, the University values the role of the UB Quartet. This year, they performed at the annual Blessing at the Founder’s Garden on August 8 which is held after the Anniversary Mass—a tradition that continues to honor the University’s heritage. The UB Quartet is also invited to perform at the garden during Founders’ Days such as Nanay Rosa’s and Tatay Fernando’s birthdays and anniversaries of their deaths.

Aside from this, UBCO and UBR performed on August 10 at the University of Baguio FAMERS. This annual event held at the CAP Building in Camp John Hay is one of the highlights of the University’s Founding Anniversary. UBCO and other performing arts groups like UB Voices, UB Graces, and UB Plug and Play have become a yearly highlight of the festivities.

Other than the University of Baguio FAMERS event, one of UBCO’s main annual performances is the eagerly anticipated University of Baguio Christmas Cantata. Held in December each year, this three-day event brings the age-old tale of the Nativity to life. The Cantata is a grand event in which students from Science High School and UB High School form a large choir which is then accompanied by the UB Orchestra.

Apart from these grandiose events, UBCO, UBR, and the UB Quartet are often asked to perform at other University functions throughout the year. Regardless of the occasion—a formal university gathering, a cultural celebration, or a special event in the community—their presence lends a sense of elegance and sophistication.

As long as UBCO continues to cultivate and exhibit musical talent, it will always be an integral part of the University of Baguio’s cultural landscape, inspiring both the performers and audiences alike.
