Where Passion Meets Prestige: UB Interns Compete and Conquer at The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island

Written by James Alfred Ominga and Lara Jean Soriano

Where passion meets prestige, excellence is born. This was exemplified as interns from the University of Baguio stepped onto the international stage and proved that UB talent can stand confidently among world-class professionals.

Renowned for its refined luxury, coastal elegance, and commitment to exceptional hospitality, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island continues to uphold the global standards of excellence set by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Recognized by prestigious institutions such as Forbes Travel Guide and AAA, the resort remains a benchmark for world-class service and culinary innovation in the hospitality industry.

This culture of excellence was vividly showcased during the highly anticipated Masters of the Craft competition, a celebration of skill, creativity, and passion among the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Food and Beverage division. The competition featured three categories: Culinary, Pastry, and Beverage. Each department selected one outstanding representative to compete, creating an inspiring display of talent across the property.

Among the competitors were interns from the University of Baguio, proudly representing their institution on an international stage. In the Culinary category were Clint Charlie Fernandez, James Alfred Ominga, Allen Jhon Cruz, Jhoser Henry Advincula, and Francis Miguel Sayaboc, while Donna Fe Lopez competed in the Pastry category.

The challenge required contestants to prepare and plate a dish within 30 minutes while incorporating a mystery ingredient, testing not only their technical skills but also their creativity, adaptability, and composure under pressure. Dishes were evaluated by a panel of expert judges based on presentation, taste, creativity, and showmanship.

After intense preparation and determination, two University of Baguio interns earned remarkable distinctions. Donna Fe Lopez emerged as the Champion in the Pastry category, surpassing experienced pastry chefs within the hotel, an extraordinary accomplishment that reflects her precision, artistry, and discipline. Meanwhile, Francis Miguel Sayaboc secured the 2nd Runner-Up position in the Culinary category, demonstrating outstanding culinary technique and professionalism.

Donna’s victory at Amelia Island advanced her to the regional level of the competition held at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Competing alongside top talents from other Ritz-Carlton properties, she carried not only her department’s pride but also the banner of the University of Baguio. Although she did not secure the regional title, her journey stands as a powerful testament to resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to her craft. Reaching the regional stage in an internationally recognized luxury brand is already a milestone that speaks volumes about her capability and potential.

This achievement resonates deeply with the mission of the University of Baguio to produce globally competent, competitive, and values-driven professionals. The success of its interns in a prestigious property abroad demonstrates the strength of UB’s academic foundation, hands-on training, and commitment to excellence in hospitality education. Their accomplishments affirm that UB students are not only ready to meet global standards but are capable of exceeding them.

The Masters of the Craft competition became more than just a showcase of culinary talent. It became a defining moment for these young professionals and a proud milestone for the University of Baguio. Their journey reflects the power of passion, preparation, and perseverance, qualities that continue to shape UB students into future leaders of the global hospitality industry.
