The Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) English program at the University of Baguio actively guides its pre-service teachers to become research-driven and innovative educators. Through mentorship, structured skills development, and continuous support, the program equips students with the knowledge, confidence, and critical thinking needed to conduct meaningful studies and apply evidence-based practices in teaching.

As part of this guidance, the program prepares students to design research projects, strengthen academic writing, and reflect on how their work can improve learning outcomes. These initiatives reflect the program’s mission of nurturing empowered advocates of competency and outcomes through collaborative learning communities.

Complementing these internal efforts, BSED students participated in the STELA Write Shop on November 20, 2025. With the theme “Write Together, Publish Together: Fostering Joint Research and Publication Efforts,” the workshop provided practical insights into scholarly writing, manuscript preparation, and the publication process. Representatives from the BSED program joined students from BEED, BAEL, BS Psychology, and BS Political Science, gaining exposure to diverse academic perspectives.

During the session, students listened attentively to Dr. Donnavilla Marie Panday-Herbster, the University’s Research Director, who shared strategies for managing studies, preparing manuscripts, and collaborating with advisers. Participants learned not only how to structure and present their research academically but also how to take the next step toward publication, turning their academic papers into work that can be shared with a wider audience. This guidance further strengthened their ability to conduct meaningful studies that contribute to educational knowledge.

The program’s effectiveness was further demonstrated during the STELA 3rd Research Colloquium, where three BSED students earned Best Paper Presentation and Outstanding Researchers awards for their study, “Reading and Listening Proficiency of the BSED English Students at the University of Baguio.” Recognized for being a simple yet meaningful contribution, the research exemplifies how the program prepares pre-service teachers to produce work that informs educational practice. The team later represented the program at the 3rd Regional Research Colloquium, highlighting the program’s leadership in developing research-oriented educators.

Through a combination of structured guidance, mentoring, and participation in academic initiatives, the BSED English program ensures that its students are not only skilled in teaching but also equipped to explore, innovate, and lead in the field of education. These experiences cultivate educators who turn curiosity into insight, studies into solutions, and learning into meaningful impact, preparing them to shape the future of quality education with confidence and purpose.
