BEACON in Action at the UB Christmas Cantata 2025

Written by Hendric Paul Labrador and Christine Tabano

The University of Baguio’s Christmas Cantata 2025, “Echoes of Bethlehem,” was not only a celebration of music but also a showcase of the vital role pre-service teachers play in nurturing learning communities. Assigned to guide Grade 9 and 10 chorale participants, these future educators went beyond supervision. They maintained discipline, guided rehearsals, coordinated with conductors, and encouraged students, creating an environment where confidence and skill could flourish.

Andrea Ramos exemplified this spirit, leading the Sopranos and Altos while accompanying practices on the piano. Her initiative reflected the group’s collective dedication, demonstrating how teachers strengthen learning environments through both skill and willingness to serve.

Midway through preparations, fourteen pre-service teachers joined the chorale performances themselves. Standing beside the students they had mentored blurred the line between teacher and learner, showing that strong learning communities thrive when everyone actively contributes.

Through their engagement, the pre-service teachers embodied the BEACON spirit, which is to empower competence, fostering outcomes, and nurturing collaboration. Their quiet yet significant contributions reminded everyone that teaching is more than instruction; it is about guiding, supporting, and inspiring growth. In every note sung and every student guided, they proved that the heart of education lies in the people who uphold it with dedication.
