November 9, 2024– The first session of the Ashal Workshop Series, with the theme “Exploring the Rhythms and Movements of Cordillera Dance and Music”a collaboration between the UB-BIMAAK (Benguet, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Apayao, Abra, and Kalinga) and UBBUK (University of Baguio BIBAK Ubbun Kaafuan) successfully concluded. Both groups joined in pursuit of sharing and establishing a lasting knowledge of Cordilleran tradition of music and dance within the university. The first session focused on the rich musical and dance heritage of the provinces of Benguet and Mt. Province, offering both theoretical insights and practical experiences to the participants.

The event was marked by a series of meaningful discussions and interactive sessions, beginning with an eye-opening discussion on Cultural Misappropriation, led by Ms. Beverly Laltoog. This session urged participants to reflect on the importance of respecting indigenous cultures and traditions. Next, Ms. Wylleth Sacyaten took the stage to discuss the significance and respectful use of indigenous attire. Her talk emphasized how the proper understanding and wearing of traditional clothing play an essential role in preserving cultural identity.

The highlight of the workshop was the exploration of Benguet and Mt. Province’s music and dance traditions, which was facilitated by the training ministers from both BIMAAK and UBBUK. The participants were given the unique opportunity to engage in hands-on training.

A key part of the workshop was the in-depth exploration of traditional songs like Ganduyan and Balbalasibasem. These sessions focused on the cultural and historical significance of the songs, allowing students to understand the deeper meanings behind the lyrics and chants. Participants were taught the melodies and were encouraged to sing along.

Following the music sessions, the participants were introduced to the Balangbang and Bendian dances, two Cordillera dances that have been passed down through generations. The dance sessions were lively and interactive, with the participants learning the intricacies of the dances and performing them with groups and as a whole.

The rhythm of gongs, the echoing chants, and the synchronized steps of the dancers filled the University of Baguio’s multi-level parking lot, creating a festive ambiance that showcased the enthusiasm of the students.

This event not only deepened the understanding of Cordilleran culture among UB Indigenous Peoples (IP) students but also welcomed non-IP students into the cultural fold. Through this collaborative learning experience, the workshop established a greater sense of unity and appreciation for the diverse cultures within the university. The results of the workshop were performed during the Fiesta Cordillera id UB during the following week.

The success of the ASHAL Workshop Series would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the University of Baguio’s Office of Student Affairs, as well as the invaluable contributions of the UBBUK training ministers and organizers. Their dedication ensured that the event was both educational and inspiring, which set a solid foundation for future cultural events and performances at the university.

The ASHAL Workshop Series promises to be a significant initiative, continuously working to preserve and promote the rich traditions of the Cordillera within the University of Baguio.
