Igniting Creativity: Fostering Innovation into the CHED Zonal Creativity Summit 2024

“Bayang Pinagpala, Lahing Manlilikha”, a theme that encapsulates the spirit of the Philippines that is blessed with both natural beauty and a rich tapestry of creative talents. The CHED Zonal Creativity Summit 2024, hosted by the University of Baguio in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), served as a platform for educators, students, and industry experts to converge and explore the collaborative opportunities of creativity and innovation. The summit aims to foster collaboration and exchange innovative ideas to promote socio – economic growth and elevate unique ideas. Notably, It featured various competitions that showcased the creativity of participating institutions including Hugpungan, Habian, and Hapag – Kainan. 

The summit was a testament to the Filipino spirit of resilience and resourcefulness. It is participated by different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from Regions 1,2,3 and the Cordillera Administrative Region including Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura Bulacan State University, Central Luzon State University, University of the Cordillera, Mariano Marcos State University, Angeles University Foundation, Urdaneta City and University of Northern Philippines. These institutions showcased their creativity through their booths located outside the UB Cardinals gym, offering a glimpse into the diverse creative talents and perspectives of Filipino Youth.

Hon. J. Prospero E. De Vera |||, DPA remarked that “Filipinos are artistic and creative people”. This statement resonates with the objectives of  Republic Act 11904, known as the Philippine Creative Industries Act, which aims to promote and support the development of the Philippine Creative Industries. This legislation seeks to unite communities in shaping the future trajectory of Filipino creativity. In this context, Dr. Jo Dann N. Darong highlighted the critical role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in strengthening, developing, and promoting creativity and innovation through the Creative Economy Roadmap, which focuses on fostering collaboration among HEIs for economic and cultural advancement under the theme “Sulong sa Pagdaluyong: HEIs and the Philippine Creative Industries Roadmap.” 

Building on this theme, Dr. Edizon A. Fermin presented “Durungan at Daluyan: HEIs as Enabling Environments for Creativity and Innovation,” where he underscored the necessity of incentivizing academic institutions to support research initiatives aimed at developing and promoting creative industries. By providing funding and grants for student and faculty research, HEIs can play a pivotal role in advancing Philippine creative sectors.

Participants also engaged in workshops that allowed different representatives of each province to showcase their own creativity and present their unique niches.Through this collaborative environment, the participants were empowered to analyze, observe and explore new avenues for expression, ultimately enriching the collective narrative of Philippine creativity. 

The CHED Zonal Creativity Summit 2024 transcended being merely a gathering of creative minds; it was a platform for empowering the next generation of creative leaders. By providing a space for young people to showcase their talents, connect with industry professionals, and learn from experts, the summit inspired them to pursue their passions and make a positive impact on society. The event was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of creativity and innovation to drive positive change. Looking ahead, we can be confident that the Filipino people will continue to inspire the world with their ingenuity and creativity.
