What makes a good leader? Some would say strength, others would say vision. But the heart of leadership has always been accountability, the ability to stand by one’s responsibilities and act with integrity. A good leader is not measured by the position they hold but by the knowledge, commitment, and sincerity that make them truly deserving of it. This truth shone brightly at the Student Leaders’ Convention and Oath-Taking Ceremony held at the University of Baguio Centennial Hall on September 11, 2025. The hall was filled with young leaders ready to take on the challenge of service. Their simple act of showing up spoke volumes, reminding everyone that leadership begins with being present, listening, and embracing the lessons that shape them.

The morning session became a journey of growth and awareness. It began with an orientation on policies, guidelines, and responsibilities, which emphasized that leadership is a privilege that comes with clear expectations. Ms. Kirstein Palmares then encouraged student leaders to value accountability and transparency by mastering the processes of resolutions, budgeting, and liquidation, skills that make paperwork less burdensome and more efficient. Afterwards, Ms. Rhogem Fernandez offered practical guidance on venue reservations and CPDO activity protocols, addressing common errors and challenges that student organizations often face when holding events and reserving spaces. Through these discussions, student leaders gained the essential knowledge they need as they take on their responsibilities in their organizations.

The afternoon session shifted toward leadership inspiration and innovation. Mr. Reuben L. Aslor delivered a powerful talk on “Empowered Leadership: Inspiring Change Through Service.” He explored the values of servant leadership, the price and responsibilities of being a leader, and the qualities necessary for those who choose to serve others. His discussion was filled with motivational quotes and practical wisdom that resonated with the participants. Following this, Dr. Donnavilla Marie Panday-Herbster presented her session on “Leading with Innovation: Turning Ideas into Impactful Projects,” which highlighted the importance of creativity and innovation in leadership, encouraging student leaders to transform their ideas into meaningful initiatives.

The highlight of the event was the Oath Taking Ceremony, where student leaders officially pledged their commitment to serve their peers and the UB community with integrity and dedication. This was followed by a fun and interactive icebreaker activity where leaders worked together to prevent balloons from touching the ground, symbolizing teamwork, problem-solving, and the importance of collaboration. The day concluded with closing remarks from SSC President Princess Janynne Abreu, who commended the participants for their passion and dedication, followed by a photo opportunity to mark the occasion.
The Student Leaders’ Convention and Oath Taking was not just an orientation, but a celebration of leadership, service, and community. It reinforced the University of Baguio’s dedication to cultivating student leaders who are equipped to lead with passion, fueled by knowledge, and committed to making a positive impact.
