BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES – The Grand Float Parade of the Panagbenga Festival is one of Baguio City’s most anticipated events, attracting thousands of spectators eager to witness the stunning floral floats and performances. This year’s parade lasted over two hours, featuring over 40 intricately designed floats. Amid the festivities, a dedicated team of nursing students from the University of Baguio (UB) and the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA)-Baguio City Chapter stood ready to ensure the safety of attendees.

Among those who ensured the safety of festival-goers were esteemed nursing students Ian Maynard C. Ramos, Angelo Emaguin, Grayle Aylwin Villaruz, Nash Lansangan, Carlyn Wagis, Giliad Ken Sarangaya, Carla Cabading, Russel Olivo, and Xyla Generao. Showcasing their compassion and professionalism, making a meaningful impact on the Panagbenga Festival.

Gathering before dawn, the First Aid Team prepared for their crucial role, equipped with medical supplies and stationed along the parade route. With the large crowd and prolonged exposure to the sun, they anticipated cases of dehydration, fainting, and minor injuries.

Learning Through Service

Beyond first aid, the team reminded festival-goers to stay hydrated, seek shade, and report medical emergencies. Their presence reassured locals and tourists that medical assistance was available.

For the UB nursing students, volunteering was more than just a duty—it was an opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. “It’s fulfilling to be part of this event, knowing that we can make a difference,” shared one student. “We’re not just here to watch the parade; we’re here to ensure everyone enjoys it safely.”

A Festival of Culture, Community, and Care

As the final float passed, the First Aid Team remained vigilant. The long hours of standing and responding to emergencies were demanding, but for these young future nurses, it was a testament to their commitment to public service.

Panagbenga is a celebration of culture and community, and thanks to the efforts of UB nursing students and PNA-Baguio, it was also a celebration of care and compassion. Their presence ensured that while the city reveled in the beauty of the parade, safety was never compromised.
