Sashed and Ready: Steve and Nicole’s Voices for Mental Health and Cultural Inclusivity

Written by Ansarolah M. Gagato

The journey to the prestigious Mister and Miss University of Baguio 2025 officially began for the School of Nursing’s proud representatives, Steve Justin S. Andres and Nicole Antonette B. Tilap, during the recently held Sashing Ceremony and Press Conference at the University of Baguio Centennial Hall.

With confidence, purpose, and genuine passion, both candidates graced the stage to receive their official sashes as Mr. and Ms. School of Nursing. More than a showcase of beauty and grace, the event served as a platform for the candidates to present the advocacies they hold dear.

Advocacies Rooted in Purpose

Steve Justin S. Andres highlighted his commitment to mental health and well-being, emphasizing its equal importance to physical health. “Fostering our mental well-being is just as important as our physical attributes,” he explained. Through this platform, Steve aims to create safe spaces where everyone feels empowered to express their thoughts and experiences, free from fear or judgment.

Meanwhile, Nicole Antonette B. Tilap proudly advocates for cultural inclusivity, drawing inspiration from her own multi-ethnic heritage as a Baguio-born Ibaloi. “We aim for a society where every individual feels safe and valued,” she said, believing that Baguio’s cultural diversity should foster understanding rather than division.

Actions that Speak Louder than Words

During the press conference, the candidates were asked how they have been promoting their advocacies.

Steve shared his involvement in Box of Joy, an outreach program rooted in Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3), which focuses on Good Health and Well-being. Engaging with children—teaching them about hygiene and self-care, and hearing their stories—reinforced his belief in the importance of gratitude and health awareness at a young age.

Nicole’s advocacy stemmed from her first pageant experience, where she represented her Ibaloi community. She realized that culture isn’t confined to race or gender, but rather in how people embrace their identities and break down barriers. This strengthened her commitment to cultural inclusivity, not only in the medical field but in every profession.

Beyond the Crown: A Champion’s Mindset

One of the most striking moments of the press conference was the candidates’ responses to a thought-provoking question: Are you ready to NOT win?

With honesty and grace, Nicole responded: “Winning is always more than just the crown or the scholarship. I believe every candidate has a purpose here—we all have substance to share. Standing in front of you, representing my school and my advocacy, is already a winning moment for me.”

Steve echoed this sentiment with optimism and purpose: “Win or lose, I believe negativity should never be in our system. This platform offers so many opportunities for growth, and just standing here as a representative of our School of Nursing is already fulfilling. Whether I win or not, I will carry this experience with me wherever I go, sharing it with others to inspire them that their dreams and aspirations are both plausible and possible.”

Carrying the Nursing Pride

As future nurses, Steve and Nicole embody the very heart of the School of Nursing—compassion, resilience, and cultural competence. With their advocacies shining through and their purpose crystal clear, they are not just contestants—they are advocates, leaders, and inspirations in the making.
