The University of Baguio’s School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management (SIHTM) made waves with its inaugural MICE convention, themed “Creating MOMENTS that IGNITE Ideas, CONNECT people, and Drive Excellence in the World of MICE” held at the UB Gym last February 13, 2025. The event united industry professionals and students to delve into crucial topics within the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry.

The convention focused on sustainable event management and the importance of effective communication in both in-person and virtual settings. Two distinguished speakers, Ms. Khristine E. Molitas, an experienced event host and public speaker from the Silver & White Toastmasters Club, and Mr. Argie Miles D. Tilap, the owner of Canish Events Organizing Services, headlined the event.

Ms. Molitas, with many years of experience in the event industry, shared her expertise in public speaking, emphasizing the importance of engaging audiences in hybrid events. She discussed the role of an emcee and host, focusing on how to connect with both live and virtual audiences. Drawing from her wealth of experience, she encouraged students to hone their public speaking skills, as effective communication remains one of the most sought-after traits by employers today.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tilap’s presentation highlighted the growing importance of sustainability in event planning. As the owner of Canish Events Organizing Services, he shared his journey in the industry and provided practical advice on incorporating sustainable practices into every aspect of event planning. From catering to technical setups, Mr. Tilap emphasized that sustainability is more than just an environmental concern; it is a core value that must be integrated into the ethical foundations of event management.

The event also included an open forum where students had the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the speakers, gaining further insights into the challenges and rewards of working in the event planning industry.

The MICE Convention marked a significant milestone for UB-SIHTM, offering students a unique opportunity to learn directly from seasoned professionals. By focusing on sustainability and communication, the event highlighted the essential skills that will drive the future of the industry. As UB-SIHTM continues to nurture talent in this field, this convention has set the stage for future events that will inspire, educate, and shape the leaders of tomorrow in the world of event planning.

The event was spearheaded by the TPC 106 class section HCP of Dr. Alvin T. Morales.
