University of Baguio Nursing Students Shine in Research, Earning Regional and International Recognition

A group of nursing students from the University of Baguio (UB) has won the Best Research Paper Award at the RIECO Allied Medical Science Research Colloquium 2024. Their study, “The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Clinical Performance of the Nursing Students of University of Baguio,” highlights the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in training competent nurses.

Conducted by Alfrelyne Cassandra Killase Dacutan, Aliyah Sandra Ticala Dumaguin, Sophia Nicole Lopez Magamano, Russel John Montano Olivo, and Danica Estella Tapado, and guided by adviser Ivy Marbella, RN, MAN, and mentors Elton John Delos Santos, RN, MAEd, MAN, and Helen Alalag, RN, MAN, the research examined the EI levels and clinical competencies of 1,134 second to fourth-year nursing students using a modified Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test and the Six-Dimensional Scale of Nursing Performance.

Continued Success in Regional and International Competitions

Following their victory at RIECO’s AMS Research Colloquium, the team advanced to the 2nd Regional Student Research Colloquium, competing against top researchers from the Cordillera Administrative Region. Their groundbreaking work earned them the 3rd Prize and the Best Presenters Award, further cementing their research’s credibility and impact.

The group’s achievements have sparked discussions within the nursing field on the importance of EI in improving patient outcomes and fostering effective teamwork. Their research suggests that developing EI in nursing students could help them manage stress, communicate better with patients, and function more efficiently in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting.

Building on their regional success, the research team recently presented their award-winning paper at the 3rd International Research Colloquium 2024, gaining global recognition for their contribution to nursing education and practice.
