Five (5) UB students of forensic science embarked on a life-altering month-long academic and cultural exchange at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University in Thailand from February 1 to 28, 2025. The intensive training touched on various subjects, which ranged from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), access to clean drinking water during times of calamity (with a focus on coliform bacteria testing in water), and introduction to the classification of external causes of injury and death. Training in medical services, food safety in disasters, occupational health and safety, forensic entomology, and forensic anthropology was also provided to students to broaden their knowledge and skills in the forensic sciences.

In addition to these practical learning exercises, the UB students were privy to hospital visits, laboratory practicals on forensic evidence methods, and identification of causes of death. The students were taught such processes as DNA analysis, histology tissue preparation, and the immunohistochemical technique, with practical application in drug screening for pseudoephedrine and PCR analysis of DNA. As part of the academic portion of the program, the students had already presented their respective research papers in a Journal Club, wherein they critically reviewed and discussed topics of interest in forensic science.

One of the highlight experiences during the training activity was collaborating with the POH TECK TUNG FOUNDATION to focus on disaster relief personnel delivering emergency medical care. The staff also gained essential skills in the medical management of a large incident as well as exposure to anti-fire training that was carried out at the Anti-Fire Training Center, during which they received exposure to prevention and control of fires. The UB students were left impressed with this holistic and practically-focused program.
The exchange program culminated in a closing ceremony on 21 February 2025, at Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, awarding the UB students of forensic science for joining and accomplishment. They were together awarded with Holy Angel University students and Panpacific University students upon completion of their one-month learning and cultural tour in Thailand. Not only did the exchange enhance their specialty in forensic science but also opened up international connections in their program.
